The paper, titled . Pennington in 1. 95. Researchers and other experts have published articles and studies that run the gamut from promoting the safety and efficacy of the diet. However, studies began emerging in the mid- to- late- 2. This process, called ketosis, begins when insulin levels are low; in normal humans, insulin is lowest when blood glucose levels are low (mostly before eating). Reduced insulin levels induce lipolysis, which consumes fat to produce ketone bodies. On the other hand, caloric carbohydrates (for example, glucose or starch, the latter made of chains of glucose) affect the body by increasing blood sugar after consumption. In his early books such as Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution, Atkins made the controversial argument that the low- carbohydrate diet produces a metabolic advantage because . A review study published in Lancet. Astrup stated, . One effect is a tendency to decrease the onset of hunger, perhaps because of longer duration of digestion (fats and proteins take longer to digest than carbohydrates). The 2. 00. 2 book New Diet Revolution states that hunger is the number one reason that low- fat diets fail, and that the diet is easier because one is satisfied with adequate protein, fat and fiber. Sugar alcohols contain about two calories per gram, although the American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics not count alcohol as carbohydrates. This may for some create an unsatisfying feeling after consumption which might promote binge behavior that culminates in an increased blood triglyceride level arising from fructose conversion by the liver. Atkins Nutritionals, the company formed to market foods that work with the diet, recommends that no more than 2. At the height of its popularity one in eleven North American adults claimed to be on a low- carb diet such as Atkins. The diet's success was even blamed for a decline in Krispy Kreme sales. Atkins was quoted as stating that the circumstances of his death from an epidural hematoma had nothing to do with his diet or history of viral cardiomyopathy. This was due to the inclusion of recipes with some high cost ingredients such as lobster tails which were put in the book to demonstrate the variety of foods which could be consumed on the diet. The analysis showed the median average of the ten diets was approximately 5. Atkins 8. 0% higher, than the American national average. This procedure uses small surgical cuts, which allow for a faster recovery. A person can often go home from the hospital within 1 day of surgery. Choledocholithiasis is the presence of at least one gallstone in the common bile duct. The stone may be made up of bile pigments or calcium and cholesterol salts. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and a procedure called a sphincterotomy may be done to find or treat gallstones in the common bile duct. MEDICINESMedicines may be given in pill form to dissolve cholesterol gallstones. However, these drugs may take 2 years or longer to work, and the stones may return after treatment ends. Rarely, chemicals are passed into the gallbladder through a catheter. The chemical rapidly dissolves cholesterol stones. This treatment is hard to perform, so it is not done very often. The chemicals used can be toxic, and the gallstones may return. LITHOTRIPSYShock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) of the gallbladder has also been used for people who cannot have surgery. Though the procedure itself is not very risky, complications after gallbladder removal surgery affect about 1. PCS). Our focus isn’t on complications caused by surgical mistakes. A gallstone is a stone formed within the gallbladder out of bile components. The term cholelithiasis may refer to the presence of stones in the gallbladder or to the. However, even after perfectly executed surgeries some people develop post- surgical symptoms. These symptoms may last for many months – or even years. Such symptoms may include: Abdominal bloating and discomfort after eating. Pain, usually in the right upper part of the abdomen. Abdominal discomfort or dull pain from excess bowel gas. Nausea/vomiting. Belching. Diarrhea. Constipation. Heartburn. Jaundice. Intolerance for fatty foods, and more. There are many potential reasons for pain after cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal). The gallbladder is surrounded by a wide variety of nerves. These nerves regulate not only the gallbladder, but also the duodenum, pancreas, stomach, and even the heart. The accidental cutting of these nerves can cause pain, and influence the normal work of these organs. Another frequent problem after surgery is that it disrupts the function of the sphincter of Oddi, the muscle valve between the bile duct, pancreatic duct, and duodenum. The valve becomes spasmodic; the bile cannot be properly eliminated and it collects in the bile duct and the pancreatic duct. The back- up of bile increases the pressure inside of the ducts, causes pain, and can give rise to severe inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) or bile ducts. Sphincter of Oddi dysfunctioncan be aggravated by using pain- killers such as Morphine and Vicodine, which in and of themselves can cause the sphincter to spasm. The removal of gallbladder stones does not remove the main reason these stones developed in the first place. The liver is an alkaline gland, which means that normal liver bile is alkaline. Liver bile ranges from 7. H. When the acid – alkaline balance of the body becomes acidic, the bile also becomes acidic. This acidity may cause a change in bile biochemistry and subsequently cause the development of gallbladder stones. A significant increase in bile acids after gallstone removal, is very irritating to the lining of the intestines. These bile acids can be very aggressive. They erode and irritate the lining of the intestines and cause bile reflux, or the back flow of bile. Bile reflux causes upset stomach, gastritis (inflamed stomach lining), pain, spasms, nausea and vomiting, severe heartburn, ulcers in the duodenum and/or stomach, and sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. Antibiotic use after gallstone removal surgery may cause Candida- yeast overgrowth, which can cause diarrhea, constipation, or sluggish bowel. Some patients have experienced a new sensitivity to foods after gallbladder removal surgery. They’ve found that many foods they could eat before the surgery were no longer tolerable, especially milk (lactose intolerance), fatty foods, or oily foods. Eating these foods after gallbladder removal can cause gas, flatulence, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome and malabsorption syndrome. These conditions can last for years, and conventional medicine offers limited treatment options. The Biotherapy Alternative Medicine Clinic of the San Francisco Bay Area offers the following comprehensive healing program for people suffering after Cholecystectomy, gallstone removal surgery or gallbladder removal surgery. The goal of this program is to decrease the pain, bloating, food sensitivities, and other gastro- intestinal symptoms. We use a safe, effective, non- drug, and holistic approach. By eating too many acid- producing foods every day (typical American diet), the body needs more minerals and bicarbonates to neutralize the daily excess of acid that is affecting the liver and pancreatic cells. Karlovy Vary Healing Mineral Water (KVHMW) has been used for centuries by generations of European medical doctors. It is prepared by dissolving the Genuine Karlovy Vary Thermal Spring Salt in the water at home. KVHMW also decreases the inner toxicity of the body, supplies more than 4. It additionally improves the function of the intestines, kidneys, and liver, which are the most important organs responsible for toxin removal and body waste. For more than 2. 50 years Karlovy Vary Healing Mineral Water has been the most popular natural approach for Europeans treating gallbladder and liver disorders.*The water is a natural bile secretion stimulant. A copious amount of high- quality European research demonstrates that KVHMW makes the bile alkaline, more liquid, and easier to secrete. It can also help to release small cholesterol stones and decrease inflammation of the bile ducts and gallbladder. Many studies prove that after surgery, such as gallbladder removal (or even liver transplantation) there is clinical improvement when KVHMW is used. Therefore thousands of Europeans use this healing water after gallbladder surgery, improving their condition without side effects. Taking control of your diet is the most basic way to regain control of your life and fight back against the disease. But can modifying your diet help in treating psoriasis? There is no definitive answer to this question. Scientists say there's little evidence at the moment to support the notion that diet can have a major impact on the disease. Dr. Wilson Liao, the study's co- author, said that obesity may provide the nudge that triggers psoriasis in people who are already predisposed to it. The researchers also found that in overweight individuals, losing weight may improve the effectiveness of treatments. Fat cells secrete cytokines, which are proteins that can trigger inflammation, explained Liao. This study focused on a . Luigi Naldi, the BJD study's lead author. Even a small amount of weight loss can have a big impact on disease severity, he added. The long- term impact of a dietetic intervention on psoriasis remains to be explored. Cold- water fish (such as albacore tuna, mackerel, salmon, herring, and lake trout) contain omega- 3 fatty acids that can help lower your risk of coronary artery disease. Choose lean meats and poultry without skin. Prepare them without adding saturated fat or trans fat. Baking and broiling are heart- healthy ways to prepare lean meats and poultry. Use fat- free, 1 percent fat, and low- fat dairy products. Limit foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. They contain trans- fat. Shoot for less than 1,5. Read food labels to see how much sodium you're consuming. Limit alcohol. If you have severe psoriasis, you may benefit from eliminating alcohol entirely. If you are going to have an occasional drink, the recommendations are: women no more than one drink per day, men no more than two. Keep an eye on your portion sizes. Consider weighing and measuring your food until you get used to appropriate sizes. Limit the amount of processed and fast food you eat. For more diet and lifestyle recommendations, visit the American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Anti- inflammatory. Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease. Many individuals have benefitted from following an anti- inflammatory diet to help reduce their symptoms. Andrew Weil, who directs the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona and is the author of numerous best- selling books on diet and health. These are plant sources of omega- 3 fatty acids. Colorful fresh fruits and vegetables. Choose foods from the colors of the rainbow. Nutritious examples are: Carrots. Squash and sweet potatoes. Spinach. Kale and broccoli. Blueberries. Mangoes. Strawberries and figs. Gluten- free. Many people with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis who are looking for treatments that don't involve drugs are interested in gluten- free diets. They wonder if these diets will improve their condition. Many studies have evaluated the benefits of a gluten- free diet for psoriasis. The link between psoriasis and gluten (a complex protein found in wheat, barley and rye and in many processed foods, from lunch meats to salad dressings) is not well understood, but new research estimates that up to 2. Celiac disease is caused by an intolerance to gluten. A gluten- free diet is the only known treatment for celiac disease. A number of studies suggest that psoriasis and celiac disease share common genetic and inflammatory pathways. Research further suggests that having psoriasis about doubles your chance of being diagnosed with celiac disease. There is no published evidence that going on a gluten- free diet can improve psoriasis in people who do not have celiac disease – but there is anecdotal evidence from people who have tried the gluten- free diet and swear by it. If you suspect you may have celiac disease or cannot tolerate gluten, you may be tempted to eliminate gluten from your diet on your own. But experts advise that you first schedule a blood test to check for the allergy. Talk to your doctor and/or a registered dietitian on how to start a gluten- free regimen. If you eliminate more than one food at a time, for example, it can be hard to know which food or foods were actually the problem. It could take up to 9. A dietician can help you make a list of gluten- free foods to make sure you get the nutrients your body needs. It is also possible that gluten isn't contributing to your symptoms, but that another food such as dairy, sugar, corn or soy might be. The challenges of a gluten- free diet. Following a gluten- free diet requires you to become educated on all the hidden sources of gluten, as well as educating everyone you live with. To avoid all gluten, you must read labels carefully. You must avoid not only wheat but its derivatives: durum, graham, kamut, semolina and spelt. The same goes for barley derivatives: malt flavoring and malt vinegar, as well as rye, MSG and soy sauce. Read labels regularly. Manufacturers change ingredients without notice. Just because a food is labeled wheat- free doesn't mean it's gluten- free. And just because a food is labeled gluten- free doesn't mean it's calorie- free. Some manufacturers add sugar, saturated fats and preservatives to their gluten- free offerings to make them taste better, and that adds calories. You can still eat a balanced diet when you're trying to avoid gluten. Gluten- free diets allow you to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Beef, chicken, fish, lamb, pork and dairy products are also naturally gluten- free. Following a gluten- free diet is a major commitment. It can be difficult to maintain a balanced diet while eliminating the many foods that contain gluten. It's not a step you should take unnecessarily. The bottom line on gluten. Yet many people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis find that including vitamins and supplements in their diet helps clear their skin and may ease joint pain. Dietary supplements can be extracts or concentrates, and they can occur in many forms, such as tablets, capsules, softgels, gelcaps, liquids or powders. Common Sense Boxing Diet. Fortunately for me, boxing was my catalyst to seeking healthy food. I was born with fast metabolism and stayed skinny my whole life. It wasn’t until I tried boxing that I saw the difference between looking in- shape and being in- shape. You must eat well to perform well and it was then that I realized the true value of good nutrition. If it wasn’t for boxing, I might have eaten junk food for the rest of my life. Poor Dieting Habits of the Modern Lifestyle. I blame recent technology and modern society for creating busier lives and contributing to poor eating habits. It is more convenient, socially and personally rewarding to eat crap as we maintain busier lifestyles in school, work, or training. Time- crunched days often lead to frequent periods of starvation and over- eating. Diet conveniences come in the form of junk food or restaurants more focused on providing a “dining experience” than actual healthy food. The only thing most people know about healthy dieting is “fat is bad and avoid junk food” and yet the average person today eats more junk food and fat foods than ever before. Proper dieting has become quite the mystery over the years. I’m not sure how it came to be that we humans have lost our ability to eat intelligently, something we were born to do naturally. The way I see it, successful marketing has been repackaging the same facts about proper dieting over and over again to be resold to the poorly- informed (and overly self- conscious) public. I’ve heard of the protein diet, the atkins diet, the vegetarian diet, the high- carb diet, the low- carb diet, and the SLOW- carb diet. I’ve been a successful athlete my entire life without ever following any of those. At worst, these diets restrict your food intake to ridiculously small amounts. These crazy diets work for a little while, until your body suffers from starvation or deficiencies in essential nutrients. At best, these diets are simply a new name for a good old fashion healthy diet! I don’t need to reinvent the science of nutrition. The secret to eating right has more to do with common sense than all the science in the world! Dieting Common Sense: You need to eat everything. Carb, protein, fats — they’re all essential to your body; the key is moderation. You need to eat at the right time. Don’t starve when your body needs energy, and don’t over- eat when you have enough. Timing your meals allow you to stay full on less food. Your diet should fit your needs. Diets are not one- size- fits- all. Everyone’s bodies, lifestyles, diets, and dieting goals are different. A weight loss diet for one person might lead to weight gain for another. Healthy dieting requires: TIMING (of meals)VARIETY (of foods)BALANCE (of nutrients)MODERATION (of portions)The Boxing Diet. As a fighter, eating properly increases your performance, decreases your recovery time, while maintaining a lean (and sexy) body weight. Boxers need more nutrients than the average person to workout, develop and repair the body. A boxer’s diet must: provide energy for physical performanceprovide nutrients for rapid muscle developmentdecrease body fat. The boxing diet varies from a normal diet in that you have to center your diets around your workouts. You need nutrients to fuel the intense workout and begin recovery right after. Eating around the workout is what makes the boxer’s diet so hard. It’s easy to under- eat and end up starving during your workout or over- eat because you feel so hungry after the workout. It’s not enough to say that “an athlete requires more nutrition than the average person.” Managing the boxer’s diet is TRICKY! There’s timing, calculation, and balance involved! The boxer has to eat more, without over- eating! WHEN to Eat. Knowing WHEN to eat,is as important as knowing WHAT to eat. Our #1 problem is figuring out when to eat. Fruits are good, junk foods are bad, etc) If you’re eating healthy but still not losing weight, it’s probably your timing that’s off. If you don’t eat at the right time, it matters very little whether you eat healthy or not–because the food gets transformed into fat anyway! The #1 diet problem. Not eating when the body needs food, and then over- eating when finally eating. If you wait till your stomach is grumbling, your body is already starving (decreased energy and recovery rate). Extreme hunger is usually countered with the next diet mistake, over- eating, which increases fat storage. One mistake usually leads to the other, putting your body in a vicious cycle of starvation (decreased metabolism) followed by periods of over- eating (fat gain). Good diet plan of 6 meals a daysmaller meals keep you energized and full throughout the daysnacks keep you from starving during long workouts and in between mealssmaller meals keep your metabolism high while avoiding over- eating. Eating smaller meals more closely matches your body’s energy use. Your biggest meals are in the mornings and the one before your workout. Smaller meals keep you satisfied without putting extra calories into you. Small Meals a Day. Eating 5 to 6 small meals a day is the best advice I can give and it really works. Boxers looking to make weight follow this religiously. Every friend I’ve had that lost 5. If there is anything you learn from reading this guide, let it be this one: Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day! My friend explained meal- timing in these simple terms: Start eating before you get too hungry. Stop eating before you get too full. Biggest Meal in the Morning. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s the first supply of nutrients for your day and kickstarts your body’s metabolism. Once you have a full breakfast, you can make it through the rest of the day on smaller meals to avoid getting hungry. Don’t be silly and skip breakfast as part of your weight loss plan. This leaves you hungry and sends your body into starvation mode (decreasing metabolism), making it stingy for energy and storing everything you eat as fat. You You need to have energy to start your day; you need to eat good breakfast. Breakfast AFTER Your Morning Run. If you do your runs in the morning, it’s best to eat breakfast after that. First off, running on a full stomach is a terrible idea. Secondly, running on an empty stomach helps you lose weight because your body will be burning off stored fat instead of the food you ate that day. It’s not necessary to do your runs in the morning, but the common belief is that it burns off fat stored from the previous night and energizes you for the day. The Pre- Workout Meal. Aside from breakfast, the workout meal is the second and only other big meal on your training day. It has to fuel your intense workout without going overboard and storing fat. You should eat 2 hours before the workout. The workout meal should be big enough to sustain your whole workout. If you’re doing a 3. If you’re like me and spend 5 hours sweating non- stop in the gym, you need a big meal. Eat light foods so that you’re not training with a half a steak still digesting in your stomach. Eating within 3. 0 minutes of your workout triggers your body’s recovery phase immediately. A boxer needs only 2 big meals a day at most; One for breakfast and another 2 hours before training. NOTE: if your workout comes early in the day, it is possible to have just one big meal. You would use the same big meal as your breakfast and pre- workout meal. Smallest Meals at Night. Later meals in the day should be kept small so that you’re not going to bed starving, but also not sleeping with unused calories. Eating before sleeping is one of the easiest ways to get fat. Your biggest meals (like breakfast and before workout) come earlier so that you have all day to burn off the calories. WHAT to Eat. This is probably the most common subject of dieting. What should I eat? The nutrients you need in large quantities are: water (essential, vital to living)carbs (for energy)protein (muscle growth & recovery)fats (vital to organs, secondary energy source)Then comes nutrients you need in small quantities: vitamins & minerals (boost immune system, support cell growth, organ functions, healthy skin, strong bones)fiber (move food through digestive system, keeps your digestive system running smoothly–helps you eat less)Basically, you need everything. Eating a wide variety of foods is key to proper functioning, growth, repair, and maintenance of your body. Deficiencies, excesses, and imbalances in diet will lead to reduced physical performance, illness, and many other negative impacts on health. Now let’s review the different types of nutrients: Water. Water is the most vital substance in your body; you need water to live. Over 5. 0% of your body weight is made up of water. From an athletic standpoint, you need water to replace fluids lost through sweating. Water: transports oxygen & nutrientsremoves waste & toxinsregulates body temperaturefacilitates digestionendless more important bodily functions. It’s no surprise that you will die sooner from dehydration than from starvation. You must drink water all the time. There is no substitute for water, not even Powerade. I recommend serious boxers to drink 2- 3 gallons of water per day, spread out into 1 cup every hour, starting with one right when you wake up and ending with one right before you go to bed. D., May, 2. My Planet Fitness Workout Routine. I joined a gym and I’m going to tell you all about it. But before I do, I want you to know that if you are significantly obese and feel you can’t exercise. Or that you have to join a gym or buy exercise equipment. Or workout for a full hour to make a difference. HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. HIIT is an exercise method in which you switch back and forth between short intervals of high intensity exercise.
Well that is NOT the case. So even though I joined a gym, I want you to remember that is not where I started. Here’s a fact: if you want to GAIN WEIGHT, then you should get on the treadmill. Most people believe that the key to losing fat and getting in shape is to spend. I started walking at 4. You can read about it here. I counted mailboxes. I’m staying away from these!! Candy and I are no longer friends . Skipping those too as they are literally two of my formerly favorite binge foods! This is what it looks like when I walk in. Plenty of equipment! No critics! You belong! Not sure where to start when it comes to weight loss and fitness? Sign up for BodyRock's 7 day Reboot Your Life challenge, and we'll get you motivated!Judgement Free Zone. Lunk Alarm! Now here is the exact workout my brother gave me. Here is my first stop. The Recumbent Bike. You have to adjust the seat to work for you. I go for 1. 0 minutes at Level 2. I wear a heart rate monitor that has two components. It wraps around my waist (yes I can get it around there now!). The other part is a watch. The equipment automatically picks up my heart rate from the monitor I am wearing. No need to hold onto the bars to get a heart rate! The heart rate monitor has become invaluable. I know what my heart rate is when I’m working out intensely. It lets me know what to aim for and what is too low or too high. The 1st 1. 0 minutes on the bike are my warm up. The 2nd 1. 0 minutes are at a higher intensity and THIS is what I add 3. So today I was up to 1. Tomorrow it will be 1. And so on. The fact that I can FIT on the bike is a very big deal. I could not have done that 1. I will admit that I was scared to get on the bike because of my knee injury. I thought bending my knee like that would probably just make it worse. I was wrong. The recumbent bike has made a big difference already. My knee does initially hurt when I start using it. Cracking and popping and making lots of fuss! But after about 5 minutes, it settles in and I’ve found that I can bend it and go up stairs much easier even after just a few days!! After the bike, I move to the Elliptial. I HATE IT!! The first day I got on it (which was just last week) my heart rate was already into the 1. I had done was stand on it! It reminded me of the first day I started counting mailboxes. But now I’m up to 5 minutes. I started with 4 and I am actually only adding 1. My brother and I discussed it and decided that is best for this one. It will get my heart rate up into the maximum zone faster than anything. I have a feeling that this will be my toughest challenge yet. After my bike and elliptical routines, I head to the stretching area where I get a floor mat. I literally get down on the floor and then get back up. Trust me–this is HARD for me. I have not been able to get on the floor and then get back up in YEARSFor me this is a major accomplishement. My brother has me doing a yoga move called Cat- Cow. Basically you are on your hands and knees and you stretch. You look up and arch your back like a cow. And then you look down and move your back up like a cat. I started with 4 times and I add one every day. Today I did 6. I think I have my eyes closed in this picture!! But at least I got back on my feet!! Do I feel kind of stupid getting up and down off the floor? A little. But who cares. I’m there for MEAnd to be truthful–I have seen so far people of every age, size and even disability in this gym. It is not a place that makes you feel self conscious. So now you know my entire Planet Fitness Routine. I drop the kids off at school and head immediately to the gym. Just the fact that I’m exercising again has made a HUGE difference. Mentally more than physically. When you accomplish the goals you set, your confidence grows. My brother calls exercise the Anti- Venom. And it’s true. Because even if it’s 3. It’s the fact that you set a goal and you accomplished it. And when you do that, a switch flips in your brain. And says WOW! YOU ROCK! And it seeps over into other areas. Like eating. You gain strength and power from accomplishing those goals. And it gives you the ability to overcome in other areas too. So in some ways I’m starting over again. Getting back into exercise after my setback. But this is a lot like my life. Sometimes you’re cruising along and get derailed. But that’s when you regroup. And start again. Whether it’s 1. Slowly but surely we will win the race! HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training For Maximum Fat Loss. HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. HIIT is an exercise method in which you switch back and forth between short intervals of high intensity exercise, followed by short rest or recovery periods. Studies have shown that HIIT can be effective for both sprinters and endurance athletes and it can be incorporated into just about any training protocol whether it be weight training, sprinting, rowing, climbing, or sport specific workouts. The key is to pick exercises that use the majority of muscle groups. Using HIIT for isolation exercises will be ineffective. However, using them for full body exercises like sprinting, squats, deadlifts, and plyometrics will really kick your fat loss into high gear. Benefits of HIIT Training. The benefits of HIIT training are several- fold. Probably one of the biggest benefits is that HIIT usually lasts only 2. This enables just about anyone to be able to get in a great workout regardless of their busy schedules. After all, we can all wake up 3. The best thing is that this short 2. By working at close to your maximal heart rate, you will be burning the most calories, and causing the most physiological changes to your body that will be beneficial to fat loss. Not only will you burn fat during your workout, but you will continue to burn fat throughout the rest of the day through EPOC (excess post- exercise oxygen consumption). EPOC is the measurable increased rate of oxygen intake following strenuous activity intended to erase the body’s oxygen debt . This all happens in the time after a workout is complete. You will not receive this great benefit simply doing low intensity exercise. You need to be working out in your anaerobic zone at maximal heart rates to really see that added fat loss effect. This EPOC has been shown to last for over 2. While this is a great benefit, it also means you need to be allowing yourself plenty of recovery time between workouts – at least 4. Why Does HIIT Training Work. To sum up why HIIT works so well, lets recap: HIIT lasts 2. HIIT can increase VO2 max for both high intensity and endurance athletes. VO2 max is the max amount of oxygen a person can use and transport during exercise. You want this number to be high because it enables us to use more fat as fuel instead of glucose. Since our fat stores tend to be much higher than glycogen stores, it is preferential to be able to get the highest percentage of fuel from fat during exercise. While sprinting uses a high amount of glycogen because it is such high intensity, the rate at which you change from fat burning to sugar burning is higher in individuals with a higher VO2 max. HIIT increases EPOC (excess post- exercise oxygen consumption) resulting in an elevated fat loss state for up to 2. HIIT trains the body to effectively remove metabolic waste from the muscles between intervals. By quickly removing lactate and other byproducts resulting from high intensity exercise, you enable the body to be primed and ready for another bout of high intensity exercise with less rest. HIIT is one of several ways to boost both testosterone and growth hormone levels. Since these hormones are highly responsible for muscle gain and fat loss, you should be doing all you can to keep levels high. HIIT Workouts. The combinations are endless when it comes to HIIT workouts. We could do any combination of intervals, but here are a few examples: HIIT training for on the track: Sprint the straightaways and walk or jog the curves. Do this for 2. 0 minutes. Sprint 2. 00 meters (half way around the track) and walk/jog the other half. Do this for 2. 0 minutes. Sprint 4. 00 meters (1 lap) and then walk/jog the next lap. Do this for 2. 0 minutes. Off the track you will want to do similar intervals, but use time as a measurement instead of distance: Sprint for 1. Do this for 2. 0 minutes. Sprint for 3. 0 seconds and walk/jog for 6. Do this for 2. 0 minutes. Sprint for 6. 0 seconds and walk/jog for 9. Do this for 2. 0 minutes. HIIT training in the gym: Squats for reps for 1 minute and then rest for one minute, then repeat for 2. Deadlifts for reps for 1 minute and then rest for one minute, then repeat for 2. Note: Make sure you are using the right form with these. Circuit training – mix up squats, bench press, deadlifts, and pullups, doing 1 minute of exercise for every 1 minute of rest. Repeat for 2. 0 minutes. Bodyweight HIIT training – combine bodyweight squats, pushups, and pullups for 1 minute of exercise followed by 1 minute of rest. Repeat for 2. 0 minutes. Box jumps – jump onto and off of a box as quickly as possible for 1 minute and then rest for 1 minute. Repeat for 2. 0 minutes. Jump rope – jump rope for 1 minute of exercise followed by 1 minute of rest. Repeat for 2. 0 minutes. By now you should have the idea. The key is to do a full body exercise for a certain period of time, and follow it up with a short rest interval, and then get right back into it. Yes, you are going to be breathing hard and not fully recovered before you start your next working set, but that’s what makes HIIT so effective. Your goal is to be able to work out at a high intensity for a longer period of time with less and less rest between intervals. To progress with HIIT, you are going to want to vary your interval times. Try lowering the amount of rest time between high intensity intervals, or try jogging instead of walking. Try shaving just 5 seconds off of every rest interval each time you work out. Eventually, you will be sprinting at a higher speed for a longer period of time than when you started. Why not give high- intensity interval training a try. You don’t need to do it every single workout, but maybe do it once a week to start to see how it goes. Be sure to give yourself a good warm up period to prevent injury, and be sure you have an interval timer to use to keep track of your interval times. I wish you great fat loss in your future.
